Changes for EU citizens in some elections

election envelope

We are currently reviewing the eligibility of all EU citizens who are registered to vote in the Braintree district following national changes to which elections they can vote in.

This follows the UK’s departure from the European Union and has been introduced as part of the Elections Act.

Letters are being issued to all EU citizens in the district to either:

  • let them know they are still eligible to vote in some UK elections
  • tell them they aren’t sure if they are eligible to vote in some UK elections, and ask them to provide information that will be used to confirm whether they are eligible

EU citizens cannot vote or stand as a candidate in UK Parliament elections.

Keep an eye out for letters and respond if you need to, to ensure you can vote in future elections.
