What Do the Keep Windows Tell Us?

Windows are the most human detail of a Norman keep. They tell us how a thick stone box was meant to be inhabited: where light was wanted, where draughts were tolerated, and where a wall could afford to be opened. The evidence survives in the fabric itself, so reading the openings is a practical way to understand a building that has stood for nearly nine centuries, like the keep at Hedingham, completed around 1140 and built of Barnack stone Hedingham Castle, Our History.

Why are keep windows small in the first place?

Small openings are not simply a sign of fear. A Norman keep is a load-bearing stone structure, and every gap weakens the wall it passes through. Narrow openings keep the masonry strong, reduce the surface exposed to wind and rain, and limit how much an attacker outside can see or shoot through. A slit that looks austere from the inside often has a wider internal splay, so it actually admits more light and gives a better field of view than the exterior suggests.

What does the shape of an opening reveal?

The profile of a window is a small record of the tools and taste of its builders. A round-headed opening, typical of the Norman period, points to the same arch vocabulary used in doorways and arcades. A later square-headed or enlarged window, cut into the same wall, points to a change of use: a chamber that needed more daylight, or a store that no longer had to be defensible. How did light move through the keep's rooms?

Light in a keep is vertical before it is horizontal. Upper chambers generally had more and larger openings, because they were the rooms people lived in and because the wall was thinner higher up. Lower levels, often used for storage, were darker and more restricted. So the pattern of light is also a pattern of status: the lord's chamber is bright, the cellar is not. This is one of the most reliable ways to reconstruct how a keep was used without any written plan, and it works even when the floors and fittings are long gone.

What about comfort and heat?

A window is also a hole in the thermal envelope. A large opening in a thick wall loses heat and lets in wind-driven rain, so medieval builders were selective. Shutters, hangings and internal timber frames, rotted away now, once did much of the work of making an opening usable. Reading the surviving hinge points, shutter rebates and the width of the internal splay helps you estimate how much control the occupants had over light and draught. This is where the evidence is thin: without surviving fittings, the reading stays tentative.

Can windows help date a building?

They can, but only as supporting evidence. Window form tracks architectural fashion, and a change in window size or head shape is a genuine phase marker. But openings are also the easiest part of a building to alter later, so a single window is weak dating evidence on its own. How can you tell a genuine window from a later hole?

Look at the edges. Original openings are cut with care, with dressed stones and a coherent curve or chamfer. Later holes often cut through coursing without regard for it, or sit awkwardly within a wall that has already been refaced. Tool marks, the finish of the splay and the way the opening meets the surrounding ashlar all give clues. A rough opening in a very thick wall is usually telling you about a later need, not a Norman one.

What should you actually do on site?

Stand inside first, then step outside. The interior view tells you how the room was lit; the exterior view tells you how the wall was built. Sketch the opening with the splay shown in section, not just the face, so the two readings stay connected. Why do these small details matter?

Because they are the least dramatic and most honest evidence a keep offers. A tower can be admired for its height, but its windows tell you what it was like to stand inside it on a wet February afternoon. They connect the building to the people who used it, and they survive in place, which is more than can be said for most of the furnishings, timber and textiles that once made these rooms habitable.

Seen this way, a keep is not a monument frozen at one date. It is a sequence of decisions about light, safety and comfort, and the openings are where those decisions are still legible.
