Programme 2012 - 2013

The Society aims to provide an interest and awareness of the local environment - it’s past, present and future.

Membership subscription: £10.00 single, £15.00 joint per annum.

Under sixteen year olds - free.

Talks and walks are free to members. Non members pay £3.00

New members are always welcome.

Thursday, 31st May, 7:00pm

Orchids and Amphibians: an evening visit to Cornard Country Park with Adrian Walters. Meet 7:00pm at allotment, Great Cornard, or 6pm at The Bell, Castle Hedingham.

Thursday 21st June, 7:45pm

The Royal Connections of St Nicholas' Church: A talk by Charles Bird. Meet at St Nicholas Church, Castle Hedingham, 7:45pm. 

Tuesday, 3rd July, 7:00pm

 Colne Valley Railway: a guided tour, talk and train ride. Meet at the railway station at 7:00pm.

Thursday, 19th July, 8:00pm
Bat Walk: A dusk walk around the castle estate identifying bats and creatures of the night. Meet at the castle gate, Castle Hedingham, at 8:00pm.
Thursday, 2nd August, 7:00pm
Warner's Mill: A guided talk and tour on the textiles and silk of the mill. Charge of £5.00.  Meet at the mill, Braintree, at 7:00pm, or at The Bell, Castle Hedingham, at 6:15pm.

Time Traveller - Defoe's tour through East Anglia: Ancenstral Voices perform a unique blend of history and music of the C18th. Meet at the Memorial Hall, Castle Hedingham, at 7:45pm. 

Sunday, 30th September, 10:30am

Roman Autumn Walk: A circular walk to the Roman villa at Gestingthorpe with a short guided tour led by Ashley Cooper. Meeting at the Memorial Hall, Castle Hedingham, at 10:30am.

British Birds of Prey: An evening talk with live birds bt Gary Butcher from Wingbeats. Meeting at the Memorial Hall.

Spitfire Summer: Essex and the drama of 1940. An illustrated talk by Paul Rusiecki. Meeting at the Memorial Hall.

Bunny CampioneChristmas Social - On and Off the Antiques Roadshow: Two course meal and after-dinner talk by Bunny Campione. Memorial Hall. Booking essential. Tickets £14.00, initially members only.

Discovery of a Roman Settlement: Ashley Cooper, local farmer and author, talks about a Roman craftsman's settlement. Meeting at the Memorial Hall, Castle Hedingham.

Poachers and Smugglers: People on the outside. A talk by hostorian and author, William Tyler. Meeting at the Memorial Hall, Castle Hedingham.

Thursday 7th March, 7:45pm

The Smaller Creatures we Love to Hate: An illustrated talk on insects, invertebrates and bugs by Cliff Moore, Essex Wildlife Trust. Meeting at the Memorial Hall, Castle Hedingham.  

Thursday 4th April, 7:45pm

Stow Maries Aerodrome: The history and ecology of a First World War Essex aerodrome. An illustrated talk by Roger Smith. Meeting at the Memorial Hall, Castle Hedingham.

Thursday 9th May, 7:45pm

A.G.M., followed by River Colne - Source to Sea: An illustrated talk on the wildlife of the river by Alex Bass, ornithologist. Meeting at the Memorial Hall, Castle Hedingham.

Projects / working mornings - dates to be arranged. Tasks to include verge/pond maintenance, tree/hedge planting, etc.
